The concept of crowd is ontologically prior to Man. Breathtaking in its range and erudition, it explores Shiite festivals and the English Civil war, the finger exercises of monkeys and the effects of inflation in Weimar Germany. Crowds and Power is also not easy to grasp, in spite of its sentence-by-sentence lucidity. Its twelve sections do not proceed in inevitable, linear fashion. Yet they are, to a degree, unified by 18 CROWDS AND POWER plain, moving expressively; and there is nothing between him and the next mill. All life, so far as he knows it, is laid out in distances the house in which he shuts himself and his property, the positions he holds, the rank he desires-all these serve to create distances, to confirm and extend them. Crowds and Power is, properly understood, a summons to rebellion, but it is miles away from the polemical and propagandistic and thus makes its political points by implication. Crowds and Power (1960) is a troubling, prophetic and erudite analysis of human groups and their interaction with power.
